Introduction
College of Nursing, Kalutara is one of the leading government nursing schools among 17 basic nursing schools in Sri Lanka. It was started on 8th January, 2007 to provide increasing demand of nurses for nationally and Internationally. It is unique within the Sri Lankan government nursing school system for being the only nursing school which has been attached to internationally recognized institution- National Institute of health Sciences (NIHS).
It offers Higher National Diploma in Nursing, under the preview of the Ministry of Health.
The program is structured to include both theoretical and practice components, ensuring the development of comprehensive knowledge, skills and professional competencies in nursing. Each academic year is organized in to 02 semesters, with each semester consisting of 26 weeks of academic and clinical learning activities.
At the completion of each semester students are required to undergo theory examinations to evaluate their academic knowledge and understanding of the relevant subject areas. Furthermore, at the end of each academic year, student must successfully complete both theory and practical examinations, including clinical assessments, to demonstrate their competency in applying nursing knowledge and skills in practice. All the nursing students are allocated to Teaching Hospital Kalutara for their clinical practice.
The medium for the program is English. In addition to gaining subject knowledge and skills, students develop many other life skills, including, self-organization, and time management.
Lectures, class room lecture discussions, Research projects, clinical teaching, Bed side clinics, group activities, role-plays, dramas and demonstrations for teaching are strong emphasis on learning. The study system supports the students through printed course materials, clinical experience book, audio visual aids, lab and field works, industry visits, web based learning and etc.
Successfully completion of the course, the students are eligible to register in nursing council of Sri Lanka to practice as a registered nurse. Altogether, College of Nursing, Kalutara has around 521 student strength currently.
Objectives
- Identify the health needs of individuals, families and communities
- Organize, co-ordinate and evaluate nursing measures aimed to prevent disease and its complications
- Establish positive and effective interpersonal relationship within the working environment.
- Respond with sensitivity to the needs and problems of patients and co-workers
- Demonstrate skills of caring in the restoration to health and the rehabilitation of patients
- Demonstrate leadership in the management of care of individuals and communities
- Practice effective communication with patients, families, co-workers and health care personnel
- Respect ethical codes of nursing and act responsible to protect human rights and individual dignity of patients, students, co-workers and other health team members.
