The National Institute of Health Sciences (NIHS) is the premier public health institute in Sri Lanka, with a rich history dating back to its establishment on July 1, 1926. Initially launched as the first health unit in Southeast Asia, located in Kalutara, NIHS has been a cornerstone in the healthcare landscape of Sri Lanka. Its primary mandate is to train health manpower for the nation, while also providing primary healthcare services to the surrounding population.
Over the years, NIHS has evolved and expanded its scope. In 1966, with support from the Ministry of Health, the Government of Australia, WHO, and UNICEF, the training facilities were enhanced, and the centre was named the ‘Institute of Hygiene’. This institute was responsible for training, laboratory, and field preventive health services. By 1979, the Ministry of Health upgraded the Institute of Hygiene to a national-level training institution, renaming it the National Institute of Health Sciences (NIHS). Since then, NIHS has functioned as a multidisciplinary training institution, catering to the training needs of the Primary Health Care (PHC) workforce in Sri Lanka and serving
as a WHO collaborating training centre.
Given its complex structure, the NIHS operates under the Deputy Director-General (Education, Training, and Research) of the Ministry of Health. The administrative and financial authority rests with the Director of NIHS, supported by two Deputy Directors overseeing Training and Field Services.
