Scope of the Research Unit

The Research Unit of the National Institute of Health Sciences (NIHS) functions as the focal point for coordinating, facilitating, and strengthening health research activities conducted within the institute. The scope of the unit includes promoting high-quality, ethical, and policy-relevant research aligned with national health priorities. The unit supports research capacity building among health professionals, assists in the development and implementation of research proposals, facilitates ethical review processes in collaboration with the Ethics Review Committee, and promotes dissemination and utilization of research findings to improve public health practice and decision-making.

Organizational Structure

The Research Unit operates under the leadership of the Head of Department and is supported by a multidisciplinary team of medical, nursing, development, and support staff.

Description of the Research Unit

The Research Unit of NIHS plays a pivotal role in fostering a research-oriented culture among health professionals and trainees. The unit provides technical guidance on research methodology, study design, data collection and analysis, and scientific writing. It also supports postgraduate and in-service training programmes by integrating research components into curricula.

In addition, the Research Unit collaborates with national and international institutions to conduct applied research, operational research, and evaluations relevant to maternal, child, and public health services. Emphasis is placed on ensuring ethical standards, scientific rigor, and the translation of research findings into practice and policy. Through these activities, the unit contributes significantly to evidence-based health system strengthening in Sri Lanka.
